The Miz & John Morrison vs The Boogeyman & CM Punk (ECW, 8-21-2007)

ECW on Sci Fi, Columbia, SC

A request! A two-pack of CM Punk and unusual tag partners in on “ECW.” Here we have Punk and his great friend, The Boogeyman, against John Morrison and The Miz, which airs just a few days after a Saturday Night’s Main Event where Punk and Boogeyman teamed against Morrison and Big Daddy V.

That’s the show that had the Evander Holyfield vs Matt Hardy boxing match, yes. This was all moving toward Morrison defending his ECW title against Punk at SummerSlam on the Sunday following this show.

(Requests open and tips always appreciated!)

Punk has a couple of pins over Morrison recently which is why he’s the No. 1 contender and all that. Tazz is afeared of The Boogeyman. Very few wrestlers have ever been so shitty and so awesome. Just a perfect performance in every way other than doing the wrestling and even then he got what he was doing, he understood his limitations.

“This guy looks like a rock star, John Morrison!” Thank you, Tazz. I wasn’t sure if I got it but now I do. Miz is flanked by “Extreme Exposé,” which is the group of Kelly Kelly, Brooke Adams, and Layla.

Punk starting with Miz. Punk does his Muay Thai kickboxing at him. Then he quickly tags Boogeyman in, and that man has a big handful of worms. To me this is too many worms. He does the thing with the worms and there are worms about. The ladies of Extreme Exposé do not like the worms. The Miz does not like the worms! Kelly Kelly is checking her white belt for worms. They go to a break there.

Back and it’s Punk and Morrison in the ring. There are worms all over the fucking place in the Punk/Boogeyman corner. Punk with a leg lariat. Arm wringer as Punk slows it down, and he wants the tag but Morrison does not want that tag. Boogeyman gets the tag, Morrison backs off. Boogeyman dances. He spits worms at Morrison, who kicks him and runs away.

God, Morrison was quick at his peak. You don’t have to like the guy’s style or whatever but his quickness and agility were elite tier. Boogeyman with a foot up as Morrison charges him, the ECW champ is at least willing to engage, more or less.

Boogey does basically nothing himself and Morrison flips over on his face out of the corner, then tags Miz, who wants nothing to do with Boogey, but here we go. Boogey catches a foot, tags Punk because we gotta get some wrestling moves done. Punk comes in and kicks Miz in the back of the skull while Boogeyman holds him by the foot, but Miz kicks at two.

Punk with a quick legdrop, another two count. Punk with a chop, headbutt, putting it on Miz here. Miz runs into a boot in the corner, but Morrison drills Punk off the second turnbuckle to the floor, just totally blindsides him while Miz distracts the ref.

Miz rolls Punk in and covers for two, then mounts and rains down some left hands. Miz is now more aggressive, more serious, more Extreme. He is a chick magnet, too. Front facelock and Morrison gets the tag.

Styles and Tazz are still having some fun calling this show, by the way. By February ’08, not so much that I could tell.

Morrison and Punk doing some good work here. I’ve really never seen them against one another, I didn’t watch this shit then, I didn’t watch much wrestling at all at the time, but they have nice chemistry. And even though Punk thinks Miz is a dork (and I doubt the other side is any friendlier), Punk and Miz in ’07 here showing some decent chemistry, too. Miz’s stuff very simple, Morrison’s very creative or whatever, and Punk worked well with both.

Miz and Morrison do a cool ass double team where Miz slingshots Punk into a Morrison elbow from the apron, and then Morrison soars over with a slingshot elbow onto Punk, with Miz’s knees still in Punk’s back. That only gets two, though, and Morrison is annoyed.

Morrison hammering down with elbows, then a basement lariat. Cover gets two again. Punk takes Morrison over and tries to race to the Boogey tag, but Morrison recovers fast and drags Punk back, tagging Miz for a series of elbows into the lower back.

Styles is surprised how well Miz and Morrison are working together, and this is in fact their very first time teaming with one another other than a ten-team battle royal on Raw in April ’07, when Morrison was still Johnny Nitro. It’s clear they have something, and by November they’re WWE tag champs on Smackdown.

Morrison with a chinlock, Punk elbowing free, but Morrison right to the back again. Punk placed up top, but headbutts Morrison and hits a sunset flip bomb from the second rope!

IT’S TIME FOR THE BOOGEYMAN HOT TAG

No, not yet. Miz gets the tag, but Punk tries a backslide after Miz races over and knocks Boogey off the apron, only gets two. Here comes the great kicking! He’s kicking everyone! He needs that tag, but Morrison outside sends Boogey into the steps. Punk dives onto Morrison! Up to the apron, Punk springboards in with a clothesline to Miz for two!

High knee in the corner! Running bulldog! Catapult into the corner! But Miz makes a blind tag when lifted for the GTS, which does hit. Punk didn’t see it, Morrison nails him from behind and hits Moonlight Drive for the win!

HEY! This is actually quite good! It has exactly enough Boogeyman, which is to say almost none, and otherwise you’ve just got Punk and two guys discovering they’re a really good tag team having a wrestling match for about 15 minutes. It gives the champ a little momentum going into The Big Match, keeps Punk hungry as the challenger, and does plenty without giving away too much. It’s really quite good!
