Randy Savage vs Ultimo Dragon (WCW, 1-31-1998)

WCW WorldWide, Orlando, FL

Here’s a weirdo ass WCW B-show matchup!

Ultimo Dragon is out to directed boos at Universal Studios, including what appears to be an old woman yelling, “Go home!” I’d say she voted for Trump but she’s surely dead by now.

Savage arrives with Elizabeth in his corner to the nWo music, which gets cheered. Heenan talks about Savage as a young guy failing at baseball because he was “a madman” who “couldn’t take direction.”

Savage offers Dragon a handshake, but Dragon isn’t falling for it. Savage bows to him, so Dragon decides to bow in return. And Savage kicks him. Savage with a headlock, Dragon sends him off the ropes, Savage shoulders him down. Dragon comes back with a dropkick, but Savage avoids a second.

Savage goes for a whip to the corner, reversed, and Savage flips Dragon to the top rope, where he does his headstand and kicks Savage down. Dragon with a kick combo, but he charges at Randy at meets a back elbow. Savage takes him down with a choke, breaks, and Elizabeth gets in there with a choke to Dragon while Savage distracts the referee. “Boy, has she become very dangerous,” Tony says.

She chokes Dragon again as Savage continues to distract the ref. She used Savage’s bandana! Savage sends Dragon off the ropes, Dragon lands on his feet on a backdrop attempt. Kicks from Dragon, but he runs into a stungun from Savage.

Savage with the bodyslam, that’s the setup — and, yep, there’s the flying elbow to finish this thing in short order.

Tony discusses some nWo fans: “As you look at the meathead fans of the New World Order. You know the guys I’m talking about, 25 to 40, still live with their mom, never had a job, smell bad.”

Bobby: “Yeah, TV dinners, lukewarm. Rented furniture, spring sticking out of the couch. Hadn’t worked in six months. No fingernails. Couple pens in his pocket, no ink. Yeah, I know Ray Traylor real well.”

Rating: 2.5/5. I mean it’s fine, you know? It’s short and a win for Savage over a guy who, by comparison, is just some doofus on the WCW roster at the time. Dragon had peaked in his WCW run in late ’96 into ’97, and by this point was just a guy hanging around. It’s unfair considering he was great, but that’s life. Life is unfair, and sometimes a washed halfassing Randy Savage whips your ass in three minutes or whatever.
