Zack Sabre Jr vs Juan Francisco de Coronado (Chikara, 11-5-2016)

Chikara Counting Backwards, Philadelphia, PA

A request! A big main event between a top international name and a guy who basically only wrestled in Chikara.

I remember seeing Coronado around this period and thinking he was a good technician and all that. He did, of course, get named among the many, many, many wrestlers who were exposed during the Speaking Out movement a few years ago. I just want to say I do know this, and that by talking about this wrestling match, I don’t mean to endorse him as a person. The same goes for anyone else, always.

(Requests open and tips always appreciated!)

Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs Damian Priest & Finn Balor (WWE, 9-2-2023)

WWE Payback, Pittsburgh, PA

A request! This is a “Pittsburgh Steel City Street Fight,” which I feel like could have been less clunky a title somehow, and is for the WWE tag belts held by Owens and Zayn.

Owens and Zayn have held the belts since beating the Usos at WrestleMania, of course, and now they are in the crosshairs of the Judgment Day.

CM Punk vs Samoa Joe (AEW, 8-27-2023)

AEW All In: London, London, England

Well, I reckon this one really might have been it for ol’ CM Punk, as he did go ahead and get himself fired after this match at Wembley Stadium.

I’m a CM Punk fan. Will always be a CM Punk fan, I suspect, unless he does something more heinous than not like some wrestlers I don’t know personally and may be every bit as annoying as he believes they are. But I also kinda felt like this was going to be it once the reports started flying around. He didn’t seem to want to be there at all. And I think, in the end, that CM Punk and pro wrestling in the 2020s may just be incompatible. It’s a world he’s not built for, and a world not built for him. Something had to give, and it did. Repeatedly.

Fire Ant vs Vin Gerard (Chikara, 6-15-2008)

Chikara Young Lions Cup VI, Hellertown, PA

A request! This is the finals of the 2008 Young Lions Cup tournament. Fire Ant beat some people to reach the final, and so did Vin Gerard, who was previously known as Equinox.

Fire Ant was a “last-minute entrant” for the tournament. Big chance for him to win a pretty nice little trophy!

Yokozuna vs Undertaker (WWF, 1-22-1994)

WWF Royal Rumble, Providence, RI

A request! A casket match for Yokozuna’s WWF title. Yokozuna is afraid of caskets, but this is also one-time only, this is going to be Undertaker’s only shot at the belt while Yokozuna has it.

DOUBLE DEEP

DOUBLE WIDE

I’ve always legit liked this match. Not in, like, a “Four point two-five stars! Actually great!” way and also not in an ironic way.

The Quebecers vs Marty Jannetty & 1-2-3 Kid (WWF, 1-10-1994)

WWF Monday Night Raw, Richmond, VA

A request! This episode is LIVE! It’s the “first-year anniversary” of Raw. This all came together over a few weeks where Johnny Polo beat Marty Jannetty with help from the Quebecers, and then Marty and the Kid called out the Quebecers for their WWF belts.

In a pre-match promo at the top of the show, Johnny Polo calls them “Marty Confetti and the poster boy for Pampers.” The Quebecers are very confident. Jacques calls them “a tune-up match” for Bret and Owen Hart at the Rumble on Jan. 22.

Midnight Express vs Southern Boys (NWA, 7-7-1990)

WCW The Great American Bash: New Revolution, Baltimore, MD

A request! The Midnights are putting the NWA United States tag team titles on the line here against the Southern Boys, the hot new (for here) tag team of Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong. They’d won tag belts in Continental and Florida, and made their way to The Big Time, where they’re getting their first “major” title shot, as it’s framed.

Terry Funk vs Kevin Nash (WCW, 1-16-2000)

WCW Souled Out, Cincinnati, OH

A request! Hey wait a minute. Like the other match in this Ko-fi request, this was in Cincinnati. Is this a Cincinnatian remembering shows they went to live? If so, that’s fun.

This match is for CONTROL! It is also a hardcore match. If WCW commissioner Funk wins, the re-re-re-re-reformed nWo must disband. If Nash wins, he becomes the new commissioner. This show is mainly remembered for WCW begging Chris Benoit to stay, even with Kevin Sullivan in charge, by putting the world title on Benoit. He did not stay.
