Joey Ryan vs Arik Cannon (IWA MS, 9-23-2005)

IWA Mid-South Ted Petty Invitational, Hammond, IN

Cannon was also in the ’04 TPI, beating Super Dragon and then winning the IWA title from Petey Williams, then losing to AJ Styles in the next round. I am not a Joey Ryan fan, and that didn’t happen in the last year. I have never liked or enjoyed Joey Ryan even just as a wrestler, even before he finally figured out a way to cover up how utterly mediocre he’d been for years.

Ryan comes out in a whole hooded cloak trying to look cool to an Imperial March remix. I liked Cannon a lot in 2004-05; I still like him, but I think that was when his career was really peaking, when he was doing his best and most inspired work. Ryan is here as a replacement for Super Dragon, who was one of the withdrawals from the tournament along with AJ Styles, Robbie Brookside, and Homicide.

Ryan’s moves are generally smoothly executed and he’s technically sound but his wrestling just had no personality at all. And he never did figure that part out, and he’s never going to now that he’s been basically drummed out of the business. This also means that Cannon, well-known in IWA MS and a notable standout at the time, doesn’t have much to work with here. Ryan’s offense is all logical and shit, but he’s getting little to no reaction.

Cannon’s forearms are nice. He wins with the Glimmering Warlock. The wrestling is executed fine and all that but there is basically no life to the match at all.
