Marek Brave vs Chris Sabin (IWA MS, 9-23-2005)

IWA Mid-South Ted Petty Invitational, Hammond, IN

Sabin’s back after a disappointing showing in 2004, where he lost to Rainman in a first round upset. Marek Brave was the other young guy out of Iowa trained by Danny Daniels, alongside Tyler Black. His career really just never totally took off although he did get pretty damn good, IMO, and he had career-ending surgery a couple years back, but he’s stayed in wrestling as a trainer where he’s clearly done quite well and has a lot to offer.

There’s a commentary discussion about how much Chris Sabin hates “poop.”

Sabin’s offense looks great as always, but this is having a hard time getting going. The crowd’s not that wild about it early, and Brave just doesn’t have the connection yet. Sabin was already very good but I feel like he always had some trouble really, like, inspiring much as a singles act, as good as he really was. The team with Alex Shelley did wonders for both of them. But that could also just be me, I suppose.

Still, again, everything he’s doing here looks great, and he’s also clearly not getting the sort of matchup that he could really shine with, as Brave is green and while he has some talent, he was struggling to put together a flow in matches this early in his career.

Brave misses a shooting star and Sabin unloads with forearms, a buckle bomb, and the Future Shock for the win to move on to round two, which was the right call. Brave was a guy they wanted to build for the future, but losing to Sabin does nothing to hurt that, and multiple Sabin matches is the right idea for this sort of weekend.

Didn’t really get too into this one, though.
