Ric Flair vs Ron Simmons (NWA, 11-24-1990)

NWA World Championship Wrestling, Marietta, GA

This is Flair’s second match in a gauntlet run. He’d beaten Buddy Landel on the Power Hour and now has Simmons. If he gets past Simmons, he faces the Nightstalker.

Flair is using Barry Windham’s “La Grange” ripoff music that I loved when I was a kid. Still do. It’s weird to see Flair use it, though. I assume this is because the Horsemen are quasi-babyfaces for the moment again because their main feud is with Doom.

Flair starts hot but Simmons absorbs the shots and hits back-to-back gorilla press slams. Flair has plenty experience against powerhouse guys, so he lures Simmons out to the floor and tries the dirty tricks. Nick Patrick prevents Flair from using a (non-folding) chair, which gives Flair the opening to smash Simmons’ face into the railing.

Man, this one rules. Flair is great working with relatively limited power guys and Simmons has great presence. Even without the crowd having anyone obvious to cheer (both are heels, really) and thus being a bit subdued.

Flair’s reeling a bit so Arn runs in. It’s a DQ. Flair does not run the gauntlet. Simmons, Buddy Landel, and Nightstalker split the $15K. None of them had to do much. Nightstalker did nothing and Landel lost!

But this is fun.
