Flyin’ Brian vs Tim Horner (NWA, 9-14-1990)

NWA Power Hour, Gainesville, GA

This is Pillman being assigned a “Running the Gauntlet” bit where if he beats Horner on the Power Hour, he wrestles Buddy Landel on World Championship Wrestling. If he beats Landel, he wrestles Dan Spivey. If he wins all three matches, he wins $15,000. Anyway, it starts here.

Ross: “I personally think it’s a breath of fresh air to see a scientific match for a change.”

Paul E: “What are you trying to say about people like Sid Vicious?”

Just absolute shit stirring.

This match is dead. Like watching two guys practice. No fire in anything, really, crowd not really into it. They try to start a “Go, Brian, go!” chant but Pillman and Horner do not turn it up. The highlight of the match may be Paul E saying, “Ric Flair has no bad habits,” and Ross replying, “You’re wrong about that.”

Pillman hops on Horner’s back for a sleeper, Horner tries to flip him over the front and they just awkwardly tumble to the mat. This is a mess. After that they smartly decide to just go to the finish (a Pillman backslide) and get this over with. They shake hands, like, “That sucked, man, thanks, good job.”

Horner was never a superstar worker but was usually solid, Pillman could be great quite often with good opponents, but this is really bad. Not only do you not have a heel or any useful pro wrestling dynamics, but the Scientific Work is really uninspired and half-assed throughout. There’s nothing here.
