Arn Anderson vs Flyin’ Brian (NWA, 7-8-1990)

NWA Main Event, somewhere

This is for Arn’s worlds televisions title championship belt strap. Flyin’ is a hot young contender but has yet to win a singles championship in the National Wrestling Alliance.

They’ve got an on-screen ad to order the Great American Bash ’90 on VHS or Beta for $24.95 plus $5 P&H. Bob Caudle on the solo call. All these solo calls I’ve watched lately have made me even more deeply appreciate solo calls. My favorite stuff is a good two-person booth with chemistry and a conversational but not overly combative, phony tone, but a good solo call is very relaxing.

Arn Anderson really perfected the balance of goofy stooge heel behavior and total in-ring credibility. Flair, Hennig, Bockwinkel at times, Michaels, some others able to balance it. You had to truly be great. He’s able to do the silly facial expressions, the “ah, he pulled my tights or hair!” bits, but you know he’s still a legitimate threat to anyone.

Caudle talks about Anderson purposely trying to use up time for TV title defenses, which have a set limit, and one of the beautiful things about the TV title was always heels escaping with time limit draws.

Even with Anderson doing his “master of using the time” stuff this goes at a solid clip, which he was also good at doing, not making it super obvious that he was filling time. Pillman is a good foil, young and energetic and super willing to do whatever. You could always tell that young Pillman absolutely loved being in the ring with guys like Anderson and Flair, the Midnights, etc. And the veterans who were actually good seemed to love having a new guy this enthusiastic and talented to wrestle.

Finish comes when Pillman hits a flying crossbody, Arn rolls through and pins high on the shoulders, hooking the tights away from the referee’s view. It’s a good match as you’d expect for all the reasons I just talked about. Usually everyone wound up looking good when Pillman was in with a guy like Anderson in this period. Both sides seemed to like being out there.
