Arn Anderson vs Scott Steiner (NWA, 3-4-1990)

NWA Main Event, Ozark, AL

The Steiners were just starting to really rise to the top as an elite tag team. The Andersons had recently tried to break Scott’s arm, and they’re now coming for the Steiners’ NWA tag belts.

Arn has Ole in his corner, Scott has Rick. Arn is TV champ but that’s not on the line here, this is just a grudge match in Alabama. (I think it’s Ozark, because they’d recently mentioned an Ozark, Alabama TV taping, and I can’t find record of this match otherwise, but also can’t find record of that Ozark show.)

Scott is in here with a vulnerable left arm, still wearing a big pad and stuff over the elbow and up to the bottom of the shoulder. Anderson has an obvious target here, and it would be his usual target anyway. Steiner gets some stuff in, but his left arm becomes useless by the middle portion because Anderson is just too focused. Steiner has just moments, and then Anderson can get back in control because he’s fighting a one-armed man.

Scott throws a clothesline with the left arm because that’s the side Anderson came in at, which is smart of Arn. Out to the floor, Steiner gets the bad arm posted. Rick finally gets involved, getting provoked by Arn kicking at him at ringside. Rick gets in the ring and the referee holds him off there, and the Andersons are then both in for the DQ, I guess, referee not doing anything, but the Andersons are heading out. Ole steals a belt. Yeah, Arn’s DQ’d.

It’s good stuff that advances a rivalry, an old top tag team trying to take down a new top tag team, trying to further legitimize the Steiners in the process. As usual, just solid TV stuff, Steiner works with a handicap but does it well, if you like “storytelling” as much as “action” this should be fine. (Not that this is the deepest storytelling, but y’know, it is wrestling.)
