WWF at Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
This is an IC title match with Von Erich defending. He’d taken the belt from Perfect in August at SummerSlam, and actually dropped it back on Nov. 19 in Rochester, NY, which wouldn’t air on Superstars on Dec. 15, so Tornado still carries the belt in here. The Rochester title change was pretty bad, and so was the SummerSlam match to be honest, but Von Erich was pretty done by this point.
I’ve done a match on here that they had a few weeks later in Florida, which made a Coliseum Video tape, but I actually figure this will be much different between now-canceled Rowdy Roddy Piper is the special referee and it’s MSG.
Sean Mooney is on play-by-play with Honky Tonk Man AND Jimmy Hart on color. Piper comically checks the boots and attire of Hennig, goosing his taint a little bit, which everyone in New York loves.
I like that Vince went, “So anyway Gary–” “Kerry.” “–Kerry, we’re gonna have you PUNCH HARD, you’ll be the HARDEST PUNCHER IN THE WWF!” “Can I do the claw?” “I’d rather you didn’t.”
This again showcases Von Erich’s really unfortunate limitations by this point. A lot of the match is built around Piper’s refereeing, which it would have been even if Kerry were still good, because Piper couldn’t take any single and not try to make everything happening fully about himself.
But Hennig can’t do anything with Tornado but brawl at a fairly tepid pace. That can work when done well, but it has to be a two-way street, and Kerry just doesn’t have it. They do a back suplex pin, Perfect doing the suplex with Piper counting three, but then Piper tells the timekeeper and Fink it was Von Erich getting a shoulder up. Even Mooney just says, “Quite a questionable decision,” and then Perfect stares Piper down and the crowd gets fired up because they see we’re getting Perfect and Piper squaring up.
Kerry comes over, and Perfect hits both of them in the head with the belt and unloads on Piper.
It’s really not a good match. The post-match stuff is the best thing.
