Jimmy Jacobs vs Sal Rinauro (IWA MS, 9-18-2004)

IWA Mid-South Ted Petty Invitational, Highland, IN

More non-tournament action on night two. Rinauro lost in the opening round to Matt Sydal, while Jacobs on night one beat Delirious in a ladder match to win the vacant IWA MS light heavyweight title, which is on the line here.

Jacobs is maybe overdoing his limp from the night before. I mean, I get he should be selling a ladder match where he took some nasty bumps (one not on purpose), but what I’m saying is he’s still overdoing it a bit. But to be fair wrestling fans are traditionally really stupid so he’s making it clear he’s got the bad back and that’s why Sal is going to attack it right away.

Prazak telling the story of Jacobs getting his spike directly from Kevin Sullivan. Punk remembers Sullivan at a show buying beer for all the boys and passing them out, and giving one to Punk, “which Corporal Robinson immediately drank.”

This match is all Rinauro from the get-go, just dominating the hobbled Jacobs. Rinauro does this all with a lot of fun, varied offense. I’m not saying he should’ve been The Guy anywhere but I’ve always been a little surprised he didn’t get a somewhat bigger name.

Jacobs’ babyface comeback is good, too, rapid fire offense but the back still killing him. And it doesn’t last because of the back, with Rinauro hitting more great flashy offense, but not able to get the win, as Jacobs is a real resilient lil’ fella, and he comes back to put Rinauro away with not one but two back sentons from the top, absolutely crushing Rinauro with the latter.

They had the time they had and they made the most of it, effectively telling the story, getting the crowd-pleasing babyface win, and both guys showing off some good offense. Actually really enjoyed watching this one again, simple and effective.
