WCW Hog Wild, Sturgis, SD

This is for Mysterio’s WCW cruiserweight title and was Dragon’s WCW PPV debut.

Dragon shoots a spin kick to start, Mysterio steps back. C&E, side headlock takeover from Dragon. Mysterio gets out quickly. C&E, waistlock takedown from Dragon, into a wristlock. Mysterio flips out and gets an armdrag takeover. Mysterio with a takedown, goes to the legs of Dragon. Dragon trips him down, snapmare, crucifix for two.

Mysterio with a takedown, steps over and grapevines the leg, Dragon gets out and goes to a chinlock. Scoop slam from Dragon, back to the chinlock. Biker crowd chants for the USA. Dragon and Sonny Onoo don’t love it.

Kick to the gut from Dragon, whip, Mysterio slides under, but Dragon hits a spinning heel kick. Quick chop from Dragon, Rey off the ropes and over, standing switch, Dragon sent back, Rey flips off the ropes, Dragon flips off the ropes, quick takedowns with leg sweeps, showing off their quickness. Crowd doesn’t really care. This is not their audience.

Quick kick combo from Dragon, a trademark spot for him. Rey off the ropes, dropkick from Dragon. Rey whipped to the corner, handspring back elbow from Dragon. Dragon trying to engage the crowd. This is the first PPV match ever at one of these Sturgis shows and everyone had to learn.

Running power bomb from Dragon and he doesn’t go for a pin. A couple bikers rev their engines in appreciation. Dragon with a figure four. Two count on Rey. One count. Two count. Two count. Mysterio gets the ropes as Mike Tenay talks about Dragon going to the finals of the J-Crown recently.

Sonny Onoo: “American fans so stupid. He’s from Mexico, not USA!”

Dragon gets Mysterio up in a torture rack, spins him around, and drops down to his knees to jar Mysterio. Again no pin attempt, but he sets for the surfboard and gets it. Mysterio slides out, covers and gets two. Another cover gets two. Dragon up and kicks Mysterio a couple more times. Chop in the corner, another chop. Into the corner, handspring elbow misses this time, Mysterio to the apron, and he surprises Dragon with a springboard dropkick to the back of the head. Baseball slide dropkick sends Dragon all the way off the ring platform to the dirt ground, and Mysterio flies the fuck all the way out to the ground with a springboard plancha, which the camera mostly misses but you can imagine was pretty spectacular.

Back up to the platform, and Mysterio throws Dragon into the ring again. Mysterio up top, flying rana! Dragon reverses a whip to the ropes, Mysterio flips out to the apron and catches Dragon charging with a shoulder, but leaps into a counter dropkick from Dragon. Dragon with the 619-style fakeout move, then dropkicks through the ropes, avoids Rey coming back at him, and hits a slingshot crossbody to the platform, landing with a real thud on the elevated stage.

Both up at about the same time and back into the ring. Rey reverses a whip, Dragon flips over a backdrop and hits a great German suplex for two. Dragon thought it was three. Dragon off the ropes, Asai moonsault bodyblock, no cover attempt again. Heenan assumes the rules are different in Japan and/or Mexico. Dragon with a moonsault, but only a two count.

Dragon goes for the running power bomb again, this time it’s countered with a frankensteiner. Mysterio whipped to the corner on a reversal, Dragon goes for something, Rey blocks, and he’s got Dragon up top now — frankensteiner blocked, but he goes right back at it and hits it for the win.

Rating: 3.5/5. There’s some weirdness in this match with Dragon not going for pins in obvious spots where he should, and the finish is kinda sudden and a little off itself, but it’s mostly a really good match. The crowd helps nothing, since they were mostly here to see the likes of Hulk Hogan, Motorcycle Enthusiast and newly turned bad guy. They would have better matches, but this one is worth watching.
