Kevin & Mike Von Erich vs Fabulous Freebirds (WCCW, 12-25-1983)

WCCW Christmas Star Wars, Dallas, TX

Request via Ko-fi. Mike Von Erich really never seemed like he actually wanted to be a pro wrestler, unlike David and Kevin and Kerry, and also unlike Chris, who wanted it more than anything in the world but just wasn’t cut out for it physically. Mike also wasn’t really cut out for it physically but for very different reasons. But I suppose what else was Mike gonna do to make good money? Sell cars in Lake Dallas? I mean, maybe.

Fabulous Freebirds vs Kerry Von Erich & Bruiser Brody (WCCW, 6-17-1983)

WCCW International Wrestling Star Wars, Dallas, TX

Request via Ko-fi. This is for the NWA American tag team title held by the Freebirds, represented here by Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy. The ‘Birds are in the midst of their war with the Von Erichs, and Kerry has brought in Bruiser Brody. There’s a great pre-match promo where Hayes is stunned that Brody has actually showed up with Kerry, and also displays a sincere fear of Brody himself: “He’s an animal. He’s wild. … Brody might be big, but I got a brother that stands 290 lbs of walkin’, talkin’, rompin’, stompin’ graveyard destruction, baby! And he don’t back up from nobody, man! And he’ll protect me!”

Fabulous Freebirds vs Southern Boys (NWA, 8-4-1990)

NWA Pro Wrestling, Gainesville, GA

The Southern Boys are Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers, if you’re a youngster who doesn’t know that. They were a terrific tag team, workhorse types who could play face or heel, probably better as faces. They were never the top team and we’re gonna be, but they could have a good match with just about anybody. Hayes and Garvin were not “great workers” in the action sense but usually still able to hold up their end if the other team was good; they were veterans who knew their trade.

Rock n’ Roll Express vs Fabulous Freebirds (NWA, 3-3-1990)

NWA World Championship Wrestling, Atlanta, GA

This is one mega “dads rock” matchup by 1990. First of all, it’s the Hayes/Garvin Freebirds, which ain’t the Freebirds, I don’t care what they say. I’ll accept Buddy Jack being out, but I can’t take it seriously without Hayes and Gordy both around, and while Garvin was a great “Freebird associate” in his better days, he was an awful Freebird, and Hayes had mostly lost the plot by this point, too.

WCCW 2nd Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, Irving, TX

This is a request via Ko-fi. This is the best three out of five falls, with the winning team splitting $100,000 (so $16,666.67 apiece) and the winner of the deciding fall getting a Lincoln Continental. The Von Erichs here are Kerry, Kevin, and Mike, teaming with Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts against the big heel team. Also on this show, Gordy beat Kamala, Mike Von Erich beat Rip Oliver, Kerry beat One Man Gang, and Kevin went to a double countout with Ric Flair.
