Terry Taylor vs Curt Hennig (WWF, 7-31-1988)

WWF WrestleFest, Milwaukee, WI

This is from the Mr. Perfect DVD WWE put out in 2008, with special commentary by Michael Cole and Mick Foley. Both guys are new on the scene in the WWF, and neither have gotten their first gimmicks. As Mick notes up front, both guys were in the running to get “Mr. Perfect.” Curt got it. Taylor wound up with “The Red Rooster.”

On one of the “Legends of Wrestling” specials — shit, Mick mentions this, too, because he was on the episode — when they talked about Hennig getting “Mr. Perfect,” Foley said Terry Taylor probably could have pulled the gimmick off, too, he had a cocky manner, was a really good technician. Michael Hayes responded very correctly: “You want a double or a home run?”

Hennig is in out of the AWA, where he’s just lost their world title to Jerry Lawler in a great match. Taylor is in from World Class, where he had a short stay after bailing on the NWA. He’d been at his best in Mid-South, but he clearly wasn’t going to be a favorite for Crockett when they bought out the UWF.

This is an outdoor show at Milwaukee County Stadium. Simple match, going on in the middle of a card headlined by a Hogan-Andre cage match a few months after WrestleMania IV, so the show also had a Savage-DiBiase rematch as the sort of “mid-show” main event, right before this match in fact. About five minutes long, neither of them do a whole lot, they’re just eating up some time, getting in the WWF ring, letting THE BRASS take a look at what they do. Hennig wins with the Hennix axe forearm.

There’s really nothing to see here, and nothing to hear, either. Foley talks about Stuff, Cole does a couple fake laughs, they pay zero attention to the match. Hennig and Taylor could’ve had a barnburner in ’88 if set loose, but it was the WWF in the 80s, where good wrestlers went and mostly were stripped down to their bare bones and, if they were lucky as heels, allowed to go make Hulk Hogan look good for a bit sometimes.
